  1. Dear Jack,
Absolutely wonderful to read through your thesis on John Masefield's work and to see your extensive collection of John Masefield works. I will read your thesis more closely with great interest. I am an avid book collector, mainly literature but also history, philosophy, etc. My first love, however is John Masefield. I have a collection of close to 400 books (many signed and/or first editions) written by him or relating to his life and his work. So it is good to see that there are others like yourself who are also avid Masefield collectors and readers.

I live in Johannesburg, South Africa and am a businessman and an adjunct professor of finance and strategy. I also write poetry - had one collection published in 2009, titled HEAP OF STONES - I write under the pseudonym AE Ballakisten www.aeballakisten.com

    Do you teach literature?

    Best regards

  2. 400 Masefields! You really are a collector. I thought I had a reasonable set of his works, but it's nowhere near that.

In answer to your question, yes, I do teach literature - at Massey University here in Auckland, NZ. This MA thesis was written 25 years ago, and only existed as a heap of mouldering typescript (pre computer-discs), but then it occurred to me that with all the new interest in Masefield nowadays it might be worth resurrecting. I don't make any great claims for it, though. It was supposed to form the basis of a book on Masefield's novels, in particular, but I don't know that that will ever happen now.

    Great to hear from you!

  3. Its great that you've put it online - I just read the conclusion again - interesting but mostly way above my head!

Have you come across many Masefield enthusiasts? I've exchanged a few emails with Philip Errington but don't know of anyone else

    Best regards
    Athol

  4. Mostly the John Masefield Society, I'd have to say. Which of course is mainly run by Philip Errington. They have a nice website, though. I guess I was mainly thinking of the various new publications over the past few years - Errington's bibliography and collected WW1 works, and the very nice volume of Arthurian poems from the mid-90s.

  5. Just found this site and very much looking forward to reading Jack Ross' MA thesis.

Many thanks about the nice things you've said about my work. But, just to set the record straight, The John Masefield Society isn't "mainly run" by me at all! I'm just one of several committee members who all play a very active role.

  6. Oh, sorry. No offence intended. I certainly didn't mean to cast any aspersions on the other members of the John Masefield Society. It was just that I'd been admiring online the ambitious Masefield web projects which appear to radiate out from your own bibliographical and editorial work. Those are the main footprint of the society for those of us not resident in England.

  7. Would I had more time to update the Masefield web projects! There's a new one recently uploaded to celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Box of Delights, by the way.

  9. Good luck with that -- I think he needs all the friends he can get these days.
